( NASA photo ) Born June 20, 1945, in New Rockford, North Dakota, but also considers Fargo, North Dakota, as his hometown. He received a bachelor of science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 1967 and a master of science degree in Aeronautical Engineering Systems from the University of West Florida in 1975. He has logged over 4,200 hours flying time -- 4,000 hours in jet aircraft. Astronaut James F. Buchli, pictured wearing an extravehicular mobility unit (EMU), is about to be submerged in the weightless environment training facility (WETF) to simulate a contingency extravehicular activity (EVA) for Challenger (October 30 to November 6, 1985). |
