Grainger Sky Theater, Adler Planetarium

The space temple on Lake Michigan remade and renamed its central hall. Gone is the old Zeiss Mark VI "starball," the sort of giant ant that would project the night sky onto the dome. In its place is the screen on which I want to watch the Bulls play for the NBA championship in June, if the Adler will only allow it. An array of 20 military-grade video projectors, plus an enveloping sound system, plus a reshaped projection surface make this into the best big-screen TV imaginable. The Grainger can show live images -- hence, my Bulls dream -- or projected theatrical programs, like the new one it developed, "Deep Space Adventure." That show is a splendid showcase for the very latest in digitally rendered astronomical imagery -- although, on second viewing, the narration by a fictional alien creature seems potentially confusing for children. The next question: When does the Pink Floyd laser light show debut?
