'Freud's Last Session' ✭✭✭1/2

The hit off-Broadway play at the Mercury Theater imagines that a dying Sigmund Freud (played by Mike Nussbaum) invites the young C.S. Lewis (Coburn Goss) to his study in London on the eve of World War II. "Freud's Last Session," written by Mark St. Germain, is a play designed to allow two of the greatest minds of the 20th century - one who saw all religious fantasies as flowing from hidden psychological needs, and the other a romantic man determined to make the intellectual case for faith - to go at each other for 90 minutes. The role of a dying Freud is a formidable undertaking for any actor, let alone one who happens to be 88 years old. For those of us who've seen a chunk of Nussbaum's 50-year-career on the stage, this is a remarkable milestone by a peerless Chicago actor.

Through Nov. 11 at the Mercury Theater, 3745 N.
