( September 20, 2011 ) Brian Stephenson has been appointed associate laboratory director for photon sciences at Argonne National Laboratory. Stephenson is responsible for three research and support divisions centered on Argonne's Advanced Photon Source, one of the most powerful sources of X-rays for research purposes worldwide. He has been interim lab director since October 2010. Stephenson is a leader in X-ray science. He received an R&D 100 award for his work on the Hard X-ray Nanoprobe and served on the APS User Steering Committee. He joined Argonne in 1995, serving most recently as senior physicist and leader of the Synchrotron Radiation Studies Group in the Materials Science Division and director of the Nanoscale Materials Collaborative Access Team at the APS. Previously, he worked at IBM's T.J Watson Research Center, first as a research staff member, then as manager of the Statistical Physics Group. From 1987 to 1995, he was spokesman for the IBM-MIT Participating Research Group at the National Synchrotron Light Source. From 1990-1994, he led the IBM-MIT-McGill Collaborative Access Team at the APS. Stephenson also is a fellow of the American Physical Society and was chairman of the 2011 X-Ray Science Gordon Research Conference. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in 1983 from Stanford University. |
