( Chicago Tribune ) Former Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner gets in an elevator at the Federal Building in downtown Chicago on Jan. 17, 1973, where he was undergoing a trial on charges of accepting race track stock while governor as a bribe from Arlington Park officials, in exchange for choice racing dates. Kerner was convicted on 17 counts of bribery, conspiracy and perjury, and was sentenced to three years in a federal prison. He was released early, after it was determined that he was suffering from terminal cancer. Kerner died in 1976. |
