Kavitha was sent into the orphanage in 2011 by her grandfather when her HIV-positive father attempted to kill her to avoid a future dowry payment. Her mother too refused to acknowledge her in hopes of a second marriage. Female infanticide is still prevalent in rural areas of India. The abuse of the dowry tradition has been one of the main reasons for sex-selective abortions and female infanticides in India. |
