Woman's injures likely were from beating, not shooting, in north Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Springfield police are investigating what first appeared to be a shooting early Thursday. Doctors told them later that it was more likely a beating.

A woman called 9-1-1 and said her mother had a wound to the face. Officers then found the victim at a home in the 1800 block of North Broadway Avenue, near Commercial Street.

At mid-morning, police said the woman was in critical but stable condition and they expected she would survive.

A police department spokeswoman said detectives were spending the morning searching the house for evidence after getting a search warrant. Investigators said it does not appear to be a random attack.

The police department said later in the day that closer examination of the woman's head by doctors indicated she likely suffered from blunt force trauma, not gunshot wounds. Police said they had a suspect in custody, although he had not been charged by late Thursday afternoon.
