BBB Brief: Top Auto Repair Rip-offs

The Better Business Bureau of Southwest Missouri put together this list of the top car repair scams.
-Dirty Fuel Injectors
You might be told to clean them every 15,000 or 20,000 miles.
The BBB points out, today's gasoline has detergent in it to keep fuel injectors clean.
-Padding The Bill
You know this one. You take your car in for one issue and the mechanic tells you about 3 other things you need to get fixed for hundreds of dollars more. If you trust the person, that's one thing. If it's a new shop, get a second opinion and an estimate on those other repairs.
-Beware of Used Parts on repairs
If you're paying for new parts, ask to see them. They should be right out of the box. When you get your car, ask to see the repair.
-Replacing the Air Filter
You don't need a new one at every oil change. The air filter is good for a year or about 15,000 miles.
-Frequent Oil Changes
Finally, the BBB says don't get sold on changing your oil every 3,000 miles. That sticker on your windshield is a good reminder, but many cars can safely go 5,000 miles between oil changes.
