Camdenton businesses offer incentive to "shop small"

CAMDENTON, Mo. -- If you're doing some Christmas and holiday shopping in Camdenton, you may have seen a candy cane painted on the windows of some shops.

It's more than just decoration. It's all part of the "Christmas Business Hop," an incentive in Camdenton to get more people into the locally owned stores and restaurants.

"People go to the businesses with the candy cane, get a ticket, and they can get it signed off there," said Bill Wood, Owner of Bill's Art Center and Gallery. "They take it around to different businesses and get it signed off. The people who go to the most businesses have a chance to win a gift certificate that they can spend at any of those businesses."

There are 60 different shops and restaurants on the list including Bills Art Center and Glalery, Ozarkland, Vintage Soul, and Stewarts Restaurant, just to name a few. The ultimate goal is to get all 60 signed off, but you don't necessarily need to get all of them.

"If you could just get to half of them, or something like that just to get an idea of who's out there, what they do, and I think they'll be really surprised and happy that they did," Wood said.

The Christmas Business Hop runs until December 20th, and there is nearly $1,300 in prizes you can win.

"Most of them will be $25. Mostly, you'll spend it at one business. There'll be a $100 and a $75 for first and second place," Wood added. "I think it's kind of fun because you get to explore our community in a way maybe you never thought about doing before, and then also you get to meet all these different people."

If you want to participate, you do not have to purchase something when you stop in to get that signature. All tickets that receive signatures must be turned in at Bill's Art Center and Gallery no later than December 20th.
