SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Eating healthy isn't always quick and convenient, but a new business in Springfield is looking to change that.
"People can kind of think of us as a healthy foods grocery store, or as a healthy foods fast food store," said DJ Vokolek, operations manager for Eat Fit Go Springfield.
The company is based in Omaha but has quickly expanded to markets like Kansas City and Sioux City, Iowa. The meals are pre-packaged, pre-portioned and pre-cooked, but not frozen. They're made in Kansas City and then delivered to Springfield, where they're refrigerated.
Everything is microwaveable, so the meals take the inconvenience out of healthy eating.
"I want to eat healthy, but I just don't have the time to be able to prep my meals, so we provide that service," Vokolek said.
The store opened in late December and has seen steady traffic since. Elijah and Brien Stokes decided to check it out after seeing friends post about it on Facebook.
"I've actually thought about healthy meals on the go and I was like, this fits the description that I've had in my mind," Brien said. "I've always been challenged with my weight and healthy options, so I thought, man this is great."
The packaged meals make everything easy to take on the go, but you can also use the store's microwaves to eat in.
"Neat to know that you can actually cook it here and sit down and have it right now, which is what we decided to do," Brien said.
Everything is baked, not fried, with macro-nutrients on the label.
"No added sodium, no added sugars, no additives, no added preservatives," Vokolek said of the food.
The easy-to-find nutritional information is a draw for anyone looking to start a health program.
"I will make a decision to not pick an item or two based on high calorie content because I have been trying to head toward the direction of healthy eating," Brien said.
"If they're looking for a lifestyle change or just want to eat more healthy, or just don't have time, we want to help them find what they're looking for," said Vokolek.
Prices for meals range between $5 and $11 and there are vegetarian options.
They also offer a "Perfect Week" meal plan that includes five breakfasts, five lunches, five dinners, five snacks and five protein bars.
Eat Fit Go is at 3233 E. Sunshine St., in the Sidewalk Plaza. It's open seven days a week.
