Family shaken after finding stranger in daughter's bedroom

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. Springfield police have a man in custody, accused of breaking into a northside home and taking pictures of a sleeping girl.

It happened along north Franklin Ave at about 4 a.m. Sunday morning. The parents of the 9-year-old girl woke up to find a strange man in her bedroom.

The man has been identified as 36-year-old Dustin Weatherman. Police arrested him in the 1100 block of West Atlantic. He was booked in jail on a burglary charge.

The girl’s parents say it looked like the man was taking photos of their daughter while she was sleeping. Her mom says she saw him holding his phone over her daughter’s bed. That's when the girl’s dad chased the stranger away. The father tells KY3 News he searched the area for the man after he ran away. He says that's why he and police were able to find the suspect a few hours after the incident.

While the family does not want to be identified, they do want to warn others about what happened.

They say they always check their locks before going to bed, but the back bolt doesn't always latch, even though it appears to be locked. The family believes the suspect got in because of the defective lock.

Police say they found no signs of forced entry.

The parents say the man didn't take anything, even though there were valuables in plain sight, instead he was only in their daughter’s room.

They say they never dreamed anything like this would ever happen to their child.

"It's scary. I'm still overwhelmed with it all. It's been 12 hours or so ago and it feels like it was 15 minutes ago. It's very overwhelming. You don't expect it to happen in your house. It's something you see on the news," The child's father said.

"It's the scariest thing that you can think of that somebody was actually actually looking at your baby and there's not really a lot you can do," The child's mother said.

If you have any information about this incident, you are asked to call Springfield police.

Also, police remind all of us to always keep our doors locked.

The family is asking everyone to be on the look out for this man’s phone. They say they believe the phone might have the photos of their daughter on it. They think the man dropped the phone somewhere in the area of this neighborhood.

Call police if you find the phone.
