Officer shoots dog after it bites his hand outside Springfield home

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Investigators say an officer shot a dog after it bit the hand of a Springfield police officer and would not let go.

It happened around 8 a.m. Thursday in the 800 block of East Lynn.

The officer responded to the home after a complaint of loud music. He tried to make contact with the resident by knocking on the front door. The officer then approached a back entrance when the dog bit his hand. The officer could not get the dog to disengage. He then fired his weapon.

The officer was treated for his injuries. The dog suffered critical injuries.
