Sears says auctioning off Springfield store will keep it open

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A corporate spokesperson for Sears tells KY3 News the Springfield store will remain open, despite news this week it is included in an auction.

We reported this week the store inside Springfield's Battlefield Mall is on the auction block. The store is one of 16 stores across the country, and four in Missouri. Sears says its intention now is to pursue a sale-leaseback. Once the auction is complete, the store will then be leased by Sears and remain open to the public.

A commercial real estate service is teaming up with an online bidding company to help Sears reduce its number of assets in hopes to once again become profitable.

The auction runs thru May 1. Sears announced plans at the beginning of the year to close more than 100 stores.
