Traffic stop leads to gunfire, arrest near Highlandville, Mo.

HIGHLANDVILLE, Mo. -- A traffic stop leads to gunfire in southern Christian County Thursday morning.

It happened at the intersection of U.S. 65 and Highway EE near Highlandville, Mo. Law enforcement is patrolling traffic at the intersection.

Christian County Sheriff Brad Cole tells KY3 News a deputy attempted to make a traffic stop in that area. The driver then took off, then stopped. The sheriff says that is when the driver showed a firearm. Investigators say the driver and the deputy then exchanged gunshots. The shots missed both. However, the deputy shortly after arrested him.

"Obviously it's something that us deputies don't ever want to get involved in, but we know it comes as a risk," said Sergeant Krista Bullard, Christian County Sheriff's Office. "So it's definitely scary, not only for the deputy but for the deputy and the families, and when I say family, other law enforcement family and their families, personal family."

Sergeant Bullard says says an outside agency is conducting the investigation.

The driver did complain of chest pains after the incident. He was taken to a local hospital.
