THOMASVILLE, Mo. - An explosion in the middle of a low water bridge injured two men in Oregon County on Wednesday night. The men are now in a hospital in Springfield.

Oregon County Sheriff Eric King says the explosion was on a bridge that crosses Middle Fork Creek on County Road 419, northeast of Alton near Thomasville and a couple of miles south of the Eleven Point River.

King says the explosion did not involve a vehicle but he didn’t know on Thursday afternoon what exploded. He also didn’t know how badly injured the two men are. King said he’d been out of the office all day and assigned the case to a detective.

King said investigators from the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Shannon County Sheriff’s Department would work with his detective on the case. A spokesman for the Highway Patrol’s Troop G in Willow Springs referred questions to King.

Ground ambulances took the injured men to meet helicopter ambulances, which took them to Springfield. The explosion was around 9 p.m.
