Companies splitting

Three of the Chicago area's biggest companies announced corporate breakups. <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORCRP017279" title="Kraft Foods Group, Inc." href="/topic/economy-business-finance/consumer-goods-industries/food-industry/kraft-foods-group-inc.-ORCRP017279.topic">Kraft Foods Inc.</a> will split its slow-growing North American grocery business from its global snacks group. After spurning takeover offers, <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORCRP017330" title="Sara Lee Corporation" href="/topic/economy-business-finance/consumer-goods-industries/food-industry/sara-lee-corporation-ORCRP017330.topic">Sara Lee Corp.</a> will separate its coffee and meats businesses. <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORCRP017190" title="Abbott Laboratories" href="/topic/economy-business-finance/chemical-industry/pharmaceuticals/abbott-laboratories-ORCRP017190.topic">Abbott Laboratories</a> will split its drug and medical products businesses in the face of growing price pressure and looming patent expirations.<br>
