'Baby Mama' could be 'The Odd Couple' for the new century

It's time to bring on the funny this weekend before Hollywood gets serious -- or, at least, gets serious with its big-money blockbusters.

First, we start with Baby Mama and then we have the sequel Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.  It's going to be a good weekend.  Seriously.

Baby Mama stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler -- the "Weekend Update" reunion that a lot of us have been waiting for.  Fey plays a successful businesswoman who can't get pregnant.  Her solution? Hire white-trash freak Poehler to carry her baby as a surrogate.

There's a good possibility for an Odd Couple for the new century as these two actresses have proven themselves as some of the funniest people working on film and on television.  With a supporting cast including Greg Kinnear, Steve Martin, and Sigourney Weaver, Baby Mama is going to have much more going on than the leads.

This looks to be a hilarious look at modern life and motherhood, even if some of the material may be a little crass.  It's written and directed by Mike McCullers, who was the unseen talent helping Mike Myers write the Austin Powers series.

Baby Mama is Rated PG-13 for crude and sexual humor, language and a drug reference.

Speaking of crass, we have Harold and Kumar returning from their 2004 trip to White Castle for an ill-fated trip across the South. After being mistaken for terrorists, they go on the lam. In addition to being detained, they also land in a KKK rally and become subject to the madcap antics of Neil Patrick Harris playing Neil Patrick Harris.

While it may be easy to dismiss the film about this duo as a standard slacker comedy,  the film's stars, John Cho and Kal Penn, brought an interesting and subversive view to being an immigrant in our modern country.  In some ways, their seemingly absurd plots have some sly social commentary. Or it could just be another stupid movie. I'll let you be the judge.

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay is rated R for strong crude and sexual content, graphic nudity, pervasive language and drug use.
