For those of you who want to get down and dirty with your humor, there's the rollicky Year One. For those of you more refined, The Moxie in Springfield has Valentino: The Last Emperor.
Year One is about two losers -- as played by the hot hot hot talent Michael Cera and Jack Black, in case you aren't tired of him yet -- who get kicked out of their primal village and roam to Earth looking for all sorts of wacky situations to get themselves into. There's a lot of Biblical and historical characters here but don't expect Harold Ramis, who directed
Groundhog Day and the first
Vacation film, to get very holy or high-minded in his depictions.
There should be more cutting edge humor than bad Flinstones-like puns. Or maybe Black will just wiggle his eyebrows all funny. All the same, Year One is rated PG-13 for crude and sexual content throughout, brief strong language and comic violence.
In downtown Springfield, you can get your fabulousness on with Valentino: The Last Emperor. This is a sumptuous documentary about the famous fashion designer that features footage shot over a two-year period with lots of juicy backstage action and insight into the last act of a career. While the film does offer some really intimate access to a pretty big name, there's nothing really in this film that hooks in the casual audience member.
If you're really big into fashion, this will be the perfect flick for you. If you're more into reading the magazines for the pretty pictures, you might want to pass. If this sounds good to you, Valentino: The Last Emperor is rated PG-13 for some nudity and language.
