Hollywood is still in the netherworld between summer blockbusters and holiday fare with the fresh remake Fame and Bruce Willis in the clone/robot stupid-fest Surrogates.

is based on the musical, which was turned into a movie that then became a TV show, and that is a movie again. This version, as has been done in the past, tells the story of several class members of the "famed" New York High School for Performing Arts. These students, of course, must go through a series of life challenges and self-doubting moments to see the full potential of their talent and their art.

Hollywood cranks out a film like this every couple of years and normally calls it something else. Why this required a remake with so many ripoffs is beyond me.

The film does star some very strong unknown talent as well as Kelsey Grammer and Bebe Neuwirth -- Fraiser and Lilith, together again. Get excited, Cheers fans!

Fame is rated PG for thematic material, including teen drinking, a sexual situation and language.

Surrogates presents a frightening future (When was the last time you saw a film with a happy future?) in which people live in isolation and program robots to live for them. It turns out the inventor of this wonderful idea is murdered. It also turns out the inventor's friend from college is FBI agent Bruce Willis.

Willis, as would never happen even in movies with no robots, is put in charge of investigating this crime but tries to use his surrogate to do it. Failing that, the FBI agent then enters the real world to really get to the bottom of things.

You can expect lots of commentary about technology and isolation to follow. If you don't discriminate with your sci-fi, Surrogates is rated PG-13 for for intense sequences of violence, disturbing images, language, sexuality and a drug-related scene.
