New offerings this week are Jim Carrey's digital counterpart in A Christmas Carol as well as the tony cast and crew behind the Army psychic film The Men Who Stare at Goats. A Christmas Carol is the same old Charles Dickens' film that has been done time and time again. Yes, Ebenezer Scrooge still hates all things about Christmas and humanity, and has to be visited by three spirits in order to learn the reason for the season. This time, director Robert Zemeckis, who gave us Back to the Future and Forrest Gump, has Jim Carrey's incessant mugging captured by digital transformation and 3D technology. This type of technology has been popular lately and the images as well as the cinematography plans to push the absolute limits of the filmgoing experience. A Christmas Carol might have been more welcome after Thanksgiving but, if you want a real cinematic ride, it's rated PG for scary sequences and images. The Men Who Stare at Goats is, incredibly, based on a true story highlighting the U.S. military's efforts to teach a select group of soldiers ESP and mind-reading abilities. Ewan McGregor plays a reporter who meets a disgruntled special unit member, as played by George Clooney, who offers all sorts of info about the program and his concerns about its leader, who has turned up missing. The idea is fantastic and the cast, which also features Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey, suggests a blistering political satire. With a first-time director at the helm, things could get bumpy. If this sounds like fun to you, The Men Who Stare at Goats is rated R for for language, some drug content and brief nudity. Most PopularMore Good StuffAdvertisement
