New movies are 'Iron Man' and 'Speed Racer'

By Gene Hartley

Last weekend showed people were ready for the blockbusters when Iron Man made over $200 million at the worldwide box office. Will people turn out this well for Speed Racer, a film adaptation of the hipster cartoon, or What Happens in Vegas...., which stars Cameron Diaz and cartoonish hipster Aston Kutcher?

Speed Racer is based on the Japanese anime hit from several years back. Our titular hero, as played by "it" actor Emile Hirsch, has a natural knack for driving cars fast and furious. Using an automobile designed by his dad, as played by John Goodman, he becomes a sensation.

After spurring a particularly nasty corporation looking for a sponsorship, Speed Racer finds himself racing for fun AND survival. The look of this film, created by Matrix filmmakers the Wachowski brothers, is pretty innovative and captures the spirit of the source material. But is anyone really clamoring for a film version of such a shallow and vapid show?

Speed Racer also stars Christian Ricci and Susan Sarandon as trying to taper down the testosterone. It's rated PG for sequences of action, some violence and language.

What Happens in Vegas is about two characters stuck in a plot where circumstances and situations force them to find true love and happiness. After a wild night in Sin City, Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz find themselves married.

After one of them wins a big jackpot using the other's quarter, they try for a divorce. In a bout of judicial activism like you've never seen, they are sentenced to live with each other for six months.

Instead of appealing this like any other normal human being, mass wackiness ensues. While the premise and Kutcher are wa-a-a-y lame, it is nice to see Diaz back on the big screen.

What Happens in Vegas... is rated PG-13 for some sexual and crude content, and language, including a drug reference.
