This weekend we have something for the kids in the form of Horton Hears a Who!, from the mind of Dr. Seuss. For the adults, or I should say men between the ages of 18 and 49, there’s the pre-apocalyptic thriller Doomsday.
----
Once again,
Hollywood has taken on the financially lucrative task of adapting Dr. Seuss'
famous and short books into 90-minute movies. Horton Hears a Who! tells of an elephant, voiced by Jim
Carrey, who discovers a microscopic community living on a spec of dust. These
are the Whos and they live in Whoville.
Even though
it seems improbable, Horton agrees to protect and care for the Whos because, as
we all know, people are people no matter how small.
Since I've
described the whole story, I am not sure how filmmakers intend to fill the time.
But, with other voices provided by
Steve Carrell, Seth Rogan, Amy Poehler, and many other popular comedic actors,
there is sure to be plenty of wisecracks as a distraction.
Horton
Hears a Who! is rated G.

Doomsday tells of the not-too-distant future when a
large part of Britain is quarantined to prevent a deadly disease from spreading.
Victims survive but turn out nasty
and violent. When the country is
hit again a few decades later, an elite group of soldiers is sent in to the
fight zone to find a cure among a group of ugly customers.
While this
sounds like every other futuristic thriller since The Road Warrior, this
film promises to be different. The director, Neil Marshall, made The
Descent and it remains one of my favorite scary movies of the past few
decades.
He promises daring thrills and a unique cinematic vision.
Doomsday is rated R for strong bloody violence,
language and some sexual content/nudity.
