Families flee rising waters in Searcy County, Ark.

MARSHALL, Ark. -- Two schools are closed due to flooding on Thursday morning. Leslie and Marshall school districts will not hold classes. More than five inches of rain has fallen in those areas.

Also, KTLO radio reports the mayor of Marshall urges residents to conserve water after heavy rains washed out the main water line to the city water source. Mayor James Busbee says authorities don't know when they can make repairs to the main water line.

In Leslie, at least 10 homes were evacuated because the Little Red River is out of its banks. The Searcy County Emergency Management director says two families are seeking shelter in hotels and the rest are with families and friends.

The water was receding at one point and the families were allowed to go back into their homes to retrieve personal belongings.

Searcy County Sheriff Jerry Loggins talked about the flooding problems on Ozarks Today. To see the interview, click on the video icon.
