Tariff drives up costs at dry cleaners

By Gene Hartley

SPRINGFIELD -- We're paying more at the gas pump and the grocery store these days. Next, we may see a jump in prices at the dry cleaners. A trade dispute is sending the price of simple wire hangers through the roof.

Each pair of pants, each shirt marked as clean, every garment gets hung up -- and that's costing dry cleaners cold hard cash. The price of the simple metal wire hanger has gone haywire this spring.

"I think everyone is feeling the pinch," said Paul Taylor of Sno-White Dry Cleaners. " We're all trying to figure out what we're going to do next. As far as I know, some have started already. We're looking here at raising prices in the next 30 days."

It seems China dumped millions of these hangers on the U.S. market in the last few years. A U.S. hanger company complained. So, the federal government stepped in and put a tariff (import tax) in place. Chinese-made hangers now cost up to twice as much as before.

At Sno-White, Taylor's supplier warned him the price could jump 85 percent before it settles down.

"The dry cleaners are really having a hard time, especially in Springfield because none of them, not just myself, we've all pretty well tried to stay the same (price) the last few years," said Taylor.

It means you could pay 10 to 15 cents more for each and every garment you have dry cleaned. You might say you've been hung up in a trade dispute.

"We've tried to hold for our customers the best we can," said Taylor.

Taylor says the price for shirt hangers started out near $20 for a case of 500. Now, it's near $40. He orders about 7,500 hangers a month.
