Limeliters take stage at Gillioz

By Gene Hartley

SPRINGFIELD -- Harmony and humor pair up tonight at the Gillioz Theatre. The Limeliters were on Ozarks Today to talk about their performance on Thursday evening.

History of the Gillioz from http://www.gillioz.org/history.html: The Gillioz Theatre was originally built and opened on Oct. 11, 1926, by road and bridge contractor M.E. Gillioz of Monett. The theatre entrance was on St. Louis Street (now Park Central East), which became part of U.S. 66, the Chicago-Los Angeles highway that was conceived in Springfield in 1926.

Originally designed as a transition theatre, the Gillioz possessed a pipe organ so that it could be used for both live performances and silent movies. In its early years, the Gillioz was Springfield’s premier entertainment venue, hosting a number of movie premiers, including “Swing Your Lady,” “The Winning Team,” and “She’s Working Her Way Through College”.

From Wikipedia: The Limeliters are a folk music group formed in July 1959 by Lou Gottlieb (bass), Alex Hassilev (baritone), and Glenn Yarbrough (tenor). The group was active from 1959 until 1965, when they disbanded.

After a hiatus of 16 years Yarbrough, Hassilev, and Gottlieb reunited and began performing as The Limeliters again. The Limeliters are still active and performing but Hassilev, the last founding member active in the group, has retired, leaving the group to carry on without any original members.
