SPRINGFIELD -- Treasure Hunters Roadshow set up shop here this week. It promises to pay top dollar for antiques and collectibles but it's a promise some say is too good to be true.

Several online reports claim Treasure Hunters Roadshow bounced checks in other cities. The company said it was an accounting error and issued customers new checks right away. Other critics also argue the Roadshow does not offer fair prices for items.

If you're anything like Kate Scheidegger, hoping to make some quick cash, your junk may be an antique collector's treasure. Treasure Hunters Roadshow offers to hook you up with collectors in the market for coins, jewelry, antique toys and more.

"We offer top dollar on all our scrap, silver scrap. Often times people will tell us when they leave they had been somewhere else and we paid them more money," said Doug Feese of Treasure Hunters Roadshow.

Dozens claim it's a ripoff. They've gone online to complain of bounced checks and other problems. Eight complaints were filed with the Better business Bureau.

"One was billing and collections issues; one was on customer service issues; six were on refund or exchange issues," said Judy Mills, president and chief executive officer of Better Business Bureau of Springfield.

All of those issues were resolved. That has sellers like Scheidegger willing to check out the show.

"Instead of putting it on eBay and going through that, I thought I'll just try this," said Scheidegger.

"The best thing I can say is, 'Come in, check us out.' You can always say no if you're not at ease with it," said Feese.

Treasure Hunters Roadshow does not give certified appraisals of items. It has buyers who tell you what they think your item is worth and they don't always buy it.

If you're interested in checking it out, the show is at the Clarion Hotel on South Glenstone Avenue (south of Friendly Ford on the outer road) from Wednesday through Friday. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
