Aisle by aisle Alicia Myers scans the store shelves looking for the best price on items like notebooks, pens and paper -- essential back to school supplies for her two kids.

"Bic pens and highlighters are a dollar each," she said.

She automatically heads toward the signs "free" and "special buy."

"This is the Staples item of the week, a penny a piece," said Myers.

Much of her savings comes from looking at the circulars, but rebates help too. Like the electronic pencil sharpener she picked up -- normally $15.99 that she gets free.

"It's 15.99 with $5.99 instant savings and a $10.00 rebate," she said.

Myers only buys the discounted items and knows every store's policy.

"Sometimes for the really good deals you need to get there on Sundays but if your store is out of that item don't worry because Wal-Mart and Target will price match these items," said Myers.

Stock piling can be another money saver and shop around.

"It's never going to hurt to have too much. I would rather buy things extra now at 75 or 80 percent off than purchase them at full price when they need them later on during the year," said Myers.
