FAIR GROVE, Mo. -- A windstorm that ripped the roof off Fair Grove school last May is driving the district to plan for an emergency shelter.

Kids were ducked in the hallway last May 8. That's exactly why the district says it needs a safe place for kids and community members to go.

It's looking to build a tornado shelter that would also double as a gym. It would sit on the south end of the Middle School building -- where the devastation hit last May.

The shelter would be able to withstand 120mph winds and hold up to 1,500 people.

"It would be a sense of safety and relief for parents to know that their kids are in a safe facility," said Fair Grove Superintendent John Link.

The district applied for a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that would pay for 75 percent of the building.
