"I learned and took part in Black History Month as a kid because it was practiced in the classroom and it was important -- but at the time, I didn’t realize how it affected me as an Asian American. It wasn’t until I built a consciousness about civil rights that I realized that these struggles were also my struggles. Obama’s election was an example of people coming together for a purpose. As an Asian American, I felt very included in this process, which isn’t necessarily the case all the time when it comes to politics and race colliding; Asian Americans are sometimes excluded from this discussion, but in this instance, I felt empowered."
