Clams Casino Pizza, Buona Vita

I'm officially spoiled on gourmet pizza. Extra cheese? Pepperoni? Boring. Make my pie the fussier the better. Like Buona Vita's take on the classic shellfish appetizer, clams casino.

The pizza starts out white -- no red sauce -- with a generous sprinkling of mozzarella, fresh garlic and olive oil. It's topped off with fresh, chewy clams and a pile of crispy bacon. I, a veggiephobe, left off the included roasted peppers, but I imagine those striving for authenticity would keep them.

Though the clam mixture topped a 10-inch circle of dough instead of a half-clamshell, it was equally rich and salty. The clams should have relished a starring role, but the bacon snatched away the spotlight, its smokiness overwhelming the seafood and garlic. Still, like most gourmet pizzas, it's the kind of pie that should be tasted and appreciated, not scarfed down with beer at a frat party or sporting event.

The clams casino is one of several designer pizzas at Buona Vita (also try shrimp with garlic, buffalo chicken with gorgonzola or spinach and ricotta) but you can get your tried-and-true favorites, too. It's all good.
