John G.C. Brainard (October 21, 1796 - September 26, 1828)

Brainard was born in New London.  He studied at Yale College and then proceeded to study the law, according to the <a href="http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/19468">Academy of American Poets</a>.  After abandoning his law practice in Middletown, he assumed editorial charge of The Connecticut Mirror, a newspaper in Hartford.  In 1825 a volume of poems was published by Brainard, mostly made up from the columns of his newspaper.  After his death, multiple editions of his writings were published.
