MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. -- A judge on Monday afternoon convicted a couple from Gamaliel for 20 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. Investigators said Tammy and William Hanson mistreated or neglected hundreds of dogs, including some rescued from Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina.
The Hansons owned a shelter called Every Dog Needs a Home. Last
fall, after getting a tip, law officers found between 400 and 500 dogs at the Hansons' two-acre lot northeast of Mountain Home.
Sheriff's deputies found one dog dead, another with a broken leg, and many sickly dogs. Most of the dogs have since been removed and taken in by animal care agencies and groups. The Hansons will be back in court on Feb. 23 to decide how much they'll have to repay of the approximately $110,000 the Humane Society of the United State has spent caring for the dogs.
After the trial, law officers arrested the Hansons for two separate incidents in Missouri. Now
they’ll have to await extradition proceedings if they don’t waive them.
The newest charge is a felony of animal theft in Lawrence County, Mo. Investigators there believe the Hansons stole eight animals.
They also face two charges of theft, one charge of theft of lost property, and three charges of tampering with evidence in Greene County, Mo. Law
officers found dogs from Every Dog Needs a Home at a property north of Springfield. A judge had ordered the dogs to remain on at the Hansons' property here in Baxter County until he approved their transfer to somewhere else.
