MOUNTAIN GROVE, Mo. -- Three teenagers died in a two-vehicle crash on Monday afternoon after their vehicle overturned as they were headed to Springfield to shop for school clothes. The crash was around 3:45 on Highway E, two miles north of Norwood in Wright County.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol identifies the victims as Debbie Akers, 16, David Allred, 14, and Casey Morris, 16. Akers and Allred lived in Mountain Grove. Morris lived in Hartville.
Troopers say the vehicle's driver, Britta McGowan, has moderate injuries and a fourth passenger, Randall Mooneyham, has serious injuries. Both are 18 years old and live in Mountain Grove. An air ambulance took Mooneyham to a hospital in Springfield.
The teens' vehicle ran off the road, skidded into the opposite lane and was hit by an oncoming vehicle.
Both vehicles flipped down the side of an embankment.
Genevieve Ellis, 59, of Mountain Grove was the driver of the second vehicle. An air ambulance took her to a hospital in Springfield with serious injuries.
Ellis was the only one of the six people who wore a seat belt. The crash ejected Akers, Allred and Morris through the rear window.
Mountain Grove School District leaders postponed the first day of school after the accident. School was scheduled to start Thursday but all schools in the district now won't start until Monday so students can attend the funerals.
Marcie Stumpff, the high school principal, and Morris’ stepsister, Jolena Mitchell, say the deaths have a big impact on the small town.
Allred had recently moved to Mountain Grove from Tennessee. That's where his family will hold his funeral. Funeral arrangements were still pending for the other two teenagers on Tuesday afternoon.
