SPRINGFIELD -- The owner of a funeral business is asking the public for patience with processions. Ty Conklin, owner of Last Ride Motorycycle Hease Co., feels drivers need to show more respect for the dead -- and their living relatives.

If you've been in a funeral procession, you've had that heavy-hearted feeling in your gut. Lately though, we're hearing about another emotion: frustration.

"They just don't seem to care," said Conklin. "I believe they did not have anybody teach them manners. Apparently nobody showed them to just take two minutes out of your life and have some respect."

Accidents do happen near funeral processions. The West Plains Daily Quill shot photos this month of one. The Highway Patrol reports the driver of a pickup pulled over for a procession and a minivan driver slammed into him.

The Missouri Driver's Guide, chapter 7, spells out how you should act in and around a funeral procession. Basically, it says, don't drive into a procession or pass one. If you do, you could be fined $100.

It may not be an issue in the future. Funeral home manager Lenny Cope is finding more people are deciding to skip the procession.

The average cost is $250 for a professional escort and, in this economy, that's an expense that's getting cut.

"What we tell our families, if they don't want to have the escorts, is we want to meet at the cemetery," said Cope.

If you do see a procession, you're asked to simply honor the dead.

"Just 2 minutes of respect -- that's all they ask," said Conklin.
