Release of fake-cop's sketch brings good leads

By Gene Hartley

WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Law enforcement officers are following up 25 tips in the search for a rapist who posed as a police officer. The Howell County Sheriff's Department released a sketch of a man wanted for two incidents this month.

In both attacks, the man put a blue light in his vehicle and used it to act as a cop to pull over a woman driver. The sheriff says, in the last 24 hours, they've received 25 tips that they classify as good.

One victim says the man raped her on U.S. 160 west of West Plains. The other bogus stop was on another highway in the area but the woman fought off her attacker and ran away.

Anyone with information can call the sheriff’s department at (417) 293-5051 or send an email message to tips@howellcountysheriff.com.
