GREENFIELD, Mo. -- Picking up tools and heading to a building site is far from anyone's idea of a relaxing vacation. But it’s what a group of church volunteers does every July. The group was here this month doing what its members call "God's Work."
Main Street Baptist Church has
big plans but not big money. It’s
building a new 23,000-square-foot building with a sanctuary that will seat
nearly 500, classrooms, space for its hugely popular after school program, and a
community room. The estimated cost
is more than $2 million. Volunteers
from a Baptist church in Grapevine, Texas, helped the church shave more than a
million dollars off its project.
"We just love what we're
doing. We've got a feeling of
accomplishment. When we leave, we
take as much away as we give them,” said volunteer Fred Joyce.
They should be getting a lot
back because they gave this church some serious sweat equity.
They added metal studs to 26-foot-high walls.
The Volunteer Christian
Builders arrived in 15 recreational vehicles, 87 people ready to lend a helping
hand, and all they expected in return from the host church was lunch and dinner.
"Typical Baptists.
We eat a lot!" said Joyce.
They should; they certainly
work up an appetite.
"It’s hard work; it’s
construction work,” said Joyce.
Many of these volunteers have
been helping for more than a decade and it’s become a family vacation.
Joyce brought along his daughter, son-in-law and three children.
"It’s just a great
family outing. they won't miss it,” he said.
Joyce and the others say they
add to their volunteer family every summer.
People they help turn around and volunteer to help another church build.
"It’s just a good
feeling, working for the Lord and trying to save other people around the
world,” said Joyce.
