SPRINGFIELD -- A man from Springfield is in the Greene County jail after being charged for the murder of his wife 17 years ago in Pike County. Douglas Howery, 57, is accused of killing Betty Ann Howery of St. Charles.

The woman disappeared in February 1992. Her husband told police he hadn't seen her after he dropped her off at the couple's property near the Mississippi River in Pike County, which is about midway between Hannibal and St. Louis.

Her disappearance was a mystery until this past October. Workers on the Howerys' former property found Betty Ann Howery's skeletal remains in a cistern.

Douglas Howery now lives in Springfield. Officers arrested him here on Thursday. He's being held in lieu of a $1 million bond.
