REPUBLIC, Mo -- For only one day each year fireworks are legal inside the city limits of Republic.
On the Fourth of July, from 10 a.m. to midnight, residents can shoot off any type of firework they want. And the residents of Republic certainly took advantage of their opportunity.
Many surrounding cities ban fireworks 365 days a year, but many Republic residents say one day is just right.
They began early and often. Resident Richard Dake heard them early Saturday morning.
"I was out in the backyard doing something 6:45 or 7, and someone was shooting off firecrackers," Dake said.
"After midnight, we're going to be getting numerous calls," Sgt. Jamie Burks with the Republic police department said. "It starts around 11, we'll get calls about fireworks going off, and asking what time they need to stop shooting."
A warning will be given for the first call, police might confiscate the fireworks on a second call.
But Wayne Barnett, who is visiting family from Michigan, said he didn't expect the city ordinance to deter anyone.
"Heck no, they're not going to stop," he said with a laugh. "They'll go all night long."
Dake believes the one day fireworks free for all is fine, but he'd like the cut off to be a bit earlier.
"I just don't think it should be until midnight," Dake said.
Still, most neighbors seemed ok with the loud cracks and booms. Because while neighborhoods gather for the family, friends and food, they'll most likely remember the fireworks.
"It's the 4th of July," said Mary Norton. "You're supposed to celebrate."
