SPRINGFIELD -- Less than a week ago, Vania (prounounced Vahn-ya) King was on Centre Court at Wimbledon in London. King advanced with her partner to the quarterfinals of the women's doubles at the world's top tournament before finally falling to eventual champions Venus and Serena Williams. A day later, the 20-year-old California native was leaving London for Springfield for her first-ever experience with World Team Tennis.
"I feel like this year I've done a lot of new things," King said on Tuesday. "Traveling on my own for the first time, I just wanted to go through some new experiences, and that's why I decided to play (World Team Tennis)."
Jet-lagged with virtually no time to get acquainted with her new sorroundings, King did find out one thing about Springfield.
"I know where the mall is," she laughed. "And that's very important to me."
While she doesn't know very much about Springfield, Springfield found out a lot about her on Monday night when the Lasers faced Newport Beach. Singlehandedly, King came up with the second biggest comeback in WTT history, bringing the Lasers back from a 20-12 deficit to a 22-21 overtime victory to keep Springfield undefeated at 3-0.
Springfield fans couldn't help but notice that their 5-foot, 5-inch dynamo could definitely be a rising star of the future.
"I feel like I can do anything on the court," she said.
On Monday night, she did.
