OZARK, Mo. -- A man suspected of trying to invade a home got behind the wheel of a Stone County Sheriff's Department detective's car, initiating a chase that topped 100 miles per hour on Wednesday evening. It ended on the southern edge of Ozark, along U.S. 65.

Peter Olson of Galena was charged on Thursday in Taney County with assaulting a law enforcement officer, first-degree property damage, stealing a motor vehicle, and unlawful possession of a firearm. He was charged in Stone County with first-degree attempted burglary.

Here's an edited news release from Stone County Sheriff Richard Hill:

Stone County deputies responded to a home on Missouri 248 east of Missouri 13 on Wednesday after a report of an attempted home invasion. The resident and her daughter were able to get a vehicle description and license number as the white van left their home.

This vehicle was later located at the Lost Tree Apartments in the area of Highway F at U.S. 65 in Taney County, just north of Branson. Detectives from Stone County and deputies from Taney County located one man at the apartments who they believe was involved in the earlier attempted home invasion. This man was handcuffed and placed in the front seat of the detective’s Ford Explorer while detectives continued their interviews of other people.

At approximately 6:15 p.m., detectives saw the handcuffed man climb from the passenger’s seat to the driver’s seat and put the Explorer into gear. The man struck another vehicle parked in the parking lot of the apartments, then drove toward deputies who were trying to get to him before he could leave.

After the man struck one vehicle, the right rear tire of the Explorer blew out, but the man continued driving out of the apartment complex onto U.S. 65 northbound.

Officers from Taney County and the Missouri State Highway Patrol chased the vehicle. It traveled at speeds of near 100 miles per hour as it continued north on U.S. 65. As it entered Christian County, state troopers were able to deploy spike strips, which caused the right front tire to deflate.

The vehicle continued to approximately one mile south of Ozark, where the driver got out of the vehicle and attempted to run. The man was taken into custody after an electric stun gun was used on him.

The driver, a 36-year-old man from Galena, was in the Stone County Jail on Wednesday night awaiting the possible filing of charges. The home invasion is still under investigation and another suspect is being sought.
