There's a lesson for all of us after The University of Missouri Athletic Department auctioned off some old cell-phones.

The 25 phones had text messages, e-mails and contact numbers.

And as KY3 Anchor and Reporter Paul Adler found out - it's not unusual for people to turn in phones with all kinds of personal information.

This is a place where old phones don't go to die... Here, they get new life... For re-sale.

Box after box of phones roll in day after day... And pick a phone.. just about any phone and you'll find a jackpot of information on-board.

Kevin Henson of Wireless Trendz says he finds call logs and phone numbers on a regular basis.

Some of the phones come from individuals... others from businesses...

Kevin Henson shows us, " these are some of the phones that a business brought in... They had 13 of these... All of them had information on them from contacts.... To text messages and pretty much anything else you could put on there..."

So, part of the job here... Is not only cleaning the dirt and dust off old phones... It's doing what you should do... Clearing the memory.

Kevin says, "we don't want other people's information getting into their hands... And I'm sure nobody wants to buy a phone with stuff on it."

Brandon Ferguson is one of the very few... Who got the message.

Brandon Ferguson says, " who knows who's getting the phone or what they can find... So, I try to make sure that nothing's on there before I get rid of it..."

Paul Adler reports, "this phone has pictures, an unopened text message, contacts... All kinds of information... So, how do you clear all that out before... You turn your phone back in?... (Paul holds phone) go into here into settings... Look for this little thing that looks like a toolbox... Click into that.. Look for initial setup... click into that... Look for master clear..."

Each phone will be a little different... And sprint phones may take more work. But, it might be worth it... If you don't want private info or business secrets landing in the wrong hands..

Kevin adds, "make sure all the information is out of it..."

The man selling those old University of Missouri Athletic Department cell phones declined to comment to KY3 about how much he made from the sale of those used phones.

Meantime, the athletic department says it will delete content from phones before putting them on the auction block.
