SPRINGFIELD -- Across America, including here, people are putting off preparations for tomorrow to get cash now in today's tight economy. For some, that means selling a burial plot, just like you'd sell a bike at a secondhand store. Some don't feel as if they have a choice.

One retired 1st grade teacher is selling three burial plots in Greenlawn Cemetery.

"I've got lots 390 to 391 in Section B," said Jane.

Jane isn't proud that she's selling the plots, and asked us not to use her real name. She bought the plots in 1973, long before health problems hit her vocal chords and forced her to retire early.

Now, late in life, it just seems to make financial sense to her to sell and get cremated when she dies.

"Why should I spend $6,000 on a funeral that I could leave to my kids, or I could pay medical bills. And, in this economy, dollars count even more. They really add up," she said.

It's a buyers' market when it comes to cemetery plots. People aren't just selling because of the economy, however. Some people put their plots up for sale because they've moved away from the area.

"A lot of times it happens with people that have inherited property. Parents or great-grandparents have passed property down and, being a transient society, people move and don't use that property," said Clay Adams.

People are flocking to Web sites like Craigslist and something called GraveSolutions to list the plots for sale. You'll find burial lots for sale in Springfield in Greenlawn, in Eastlawn and in White Chapel cemeteries.
