SPRINGFIELD -- Some young men who woke up Monday morning missing some of their most valuable possessions learned a tough lesson. They were the victims of another home invasion just outside the city.
“I'm a light sleeper; I didn't hear a thing. Maybe it's a blessing we didn't hear them. They could have a knife and we’d have been stabbed,” said Kyle Yount. Yount and Derrick Nichols are keeping positive despite three people invading their home on West Montclair Street while they were sleeping. “You don't have an attack dog?” a reporter asked. “We have an attack cat, Mr. Wiggles,” said Nichols. “He didn't do anything,” said Yount. The thieves got away with a TV, game console and a watch. "Yeah, I got a Rolex," said Nichols. “It's not a Rolex; it's worth $20.” They also got Yount's Trailblazer, which has since been recovered. “There could have been a lot worse damage,” he said. The robbers backed into a mailbox before hitting another home a few doors away in the 3000 block of South Ridgecrest Drive. The robber is something the students from Lincoln, Mo., didn't think would happen here. “We don't lock anything up; we're from a farm,” said Yount. Law enforcement wants to remind people that we're entering the holiday season, and thieves are out there looking to make a quick buck. These two home invasions were crimes of opportunity, with doors left unlocked. Officers also remind folks to put anything of value out of the thieves’ eyes. “GPS, fuzzbusters, MP3 players, garage door remotes -- put them away,” said Greene County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Phil Corcoran. It’s something the roommates will be doing from now on. For now, at least they have a good sense of humor. “You got to laugh, it just happens,” said Nichols. “You have to or it'll eat you up,” said Yount. Greene County sheriff's deputies are investigating a few leads. They say they do not have any reason to believe the victims and suspects knew each other. At the second home that was invaded on Monday morning, the homeowner confronted the robbers. They fought with him and took off. The victim had minor injuries and refused treatment. This invasion is not far from another one on West Village Lane on Oct. 16. Investigators believe that one and another one in southwest Springfield on South Glenn Avenue a few days earlier were both targeted invasions, not random ones. Most Popular
