The message reads, "This is an automated message from St. John's CU. Your ATM card has been suspended. To reactive call urgent at 1-877-827-4119."
Today, St. John's Credit Union is telling its customers that text did not come from them. "Obviously, that did not come from us, and what they're trying to do is just get their information," says SJCU President Tammy Lee.
She doesn't know how many people received the text, but believes only about 30-percent of the recipients were actual credit union members.
We called the number provided, but found it's been disconnected.
Thursday, though, anyone who did get a connection reportedly faced a request for their account numbers--even PINs--an all access pass to the money in their bank accounts.
"We're not going to ask for your PIN. We don't house it here, either. We do not have access to that information," Lee clarifies.
And they hope customers didn't provide criminals that access, either. However, if they did, SJCU is asking them to call, but on the number listed in the phone book.
"They definitely need to contact us. We will take steps to get their old account closed, open a new one, and secure their information," says Lee.
SJCU says consumers are protected, but if they think their information was compromised, they do need to contact the financial institution right away.
