SPRINGFIELD -- Some private school students are using the Discovery Center as a classroom. Even when the interactive museum is closed to the public on Mondays, it's open to students from The Summit.

Grades six through ten attend daily classes at the Discovery Center. The two organizations partnered this year after The Summit started looking for more room and better science labs.

The students still learn from books but they're able to apply what they've read by visiting the exhibits and laboratories. During one experiment, they made their own DNA strands visible in a test tube.

"A book is a piece of paper with some words," said Summit student Jack Love. "If you can live what the book is saying, if you are writing the book in your own head, it makes all the difference"

"They have lots of questions and they're very eager to ask those questions. And being in a place like this is so exciting because not only does it help them answer their questions but it helps them think of more questions. That's what's so exciting," said Karen Sweeney, Summit's Head of School.

The program doesn't change the Discovery Center's operating hours. It's still open to the public and for field trips.
