Just a week into the season, the defending Class 5 girls state champion Nixa Lady Eagles have shown they'll once again be a force to deal with on the high school basketball scene.
On Saturday, playing against their neighborhood rival Ozark in the championship game of Ozark's own tournament, Nixa put on a strong performance in dominating the Lady Tigers 70-43. Both teams have lost some key players from last year's successful squads, but obviously Nixa seems to have some strong replacements for the departed seniors as they led throughout, doubling up Ozark at 30 to 16 maintaining their advantage throughout the second half.
Nixa's returning all-stater Bethanie Funderburke led the Lady Eagles with 21 points, but head coach Jim Middleton his team shouldn't get to excited about their strong start as a good Mt. Vernon team awaits them on Monday night and another state power, Springfield Kickapoo, hosts Nixa in a tournament this coming weekend.
