OZARK, Mo. -- The first diverging diamond in North America is helping guide traffic through the Missouri 13/Interstate 44 interchange in Springfield.  Now planners are contemplating bringing more diverging diamonds to the Ozarks.

Preliminary plans for the unique intersection design are being talked about in Christian County.  Officials are taking the initial steps to look at whether placing a diamond on Highway CC at U.S. 65 would help alleviate traffic backups.

"When you know that you've seen such a success on the one they've implemented in north Springfield, well sure you're going to consider that," said Ozark City Administrator Steve Childers.

MoDOT and Springfield will add two more diverging diamond intersections in the next two years -- one on National Avenue at James River Freeway is already under construction and another on Chestnut Expressway at U.S. 65 is planned for 2011.

Missouri Department of Transportation officials say the groundbreaking diamond on Missouri 13 is catching the attention of other states, drawing calls from Utah, Tennessee and Pennsylvania.
