Bitter cold and snow slows business for some

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The cold weather make us all want to hibernate inside and stay warm. Hot coffee, plumbers and mechanics may be in high demand but some other businesses see a slowdown.

The frozen white stuff on the ground is plentiful but the frozen custard at Andy's is being made in smaller quantities lately.

"We run a little bit smaller batches but we're always running stuff fresh," said general manager Randal Schulze.

That's because the number of customers coming to the window has dropped.

"This is historically our slowest month of the year, so it's not just a drastic change, although the weather slows it down a little bit," he said.

Sub-zero wind chills may cause many to avoid a cold treat, but not all.

"A lot of people still swing by for their daily treat, whether it be a concrete or a shake, or something warm, like an apple pie sundae," Schulze said.

If you do order some custard in this frigid weather, Andy's has something special for your loyalty.

"If they're coming out when it's zero, they're pretty loyal," Schulze said.

You could also be rewarded, in this weather, if you go tromping through the snow to shop for a new car.

"This is one of the best times to buy a car, because of what you see: the weather, slow traffic," said Harold Neely, owner of Central Dodge.

The service department has been busy the past few days but the lot is filled with news cars and snow, and few customers.

"Sales guys aren't quite as busy right now with floor traffic and drive-in traffic but they get on the phone, and they start calling previous customers and tell them what kind of incentives we've got going on this time of year," Neeley said.

He says the factory rebates and interest rates are good but, besides that, there's the desire to sell.

"Every dealer in town, I promise you, will tell you, they're ready to sell cars today," said Neeley.

Andy's Frozen Custard says its hot apple pie sundae is one of the most popular items right now. For Central Dodge, trucks are the most popular sale this time of year.
