SPRINGFIELD -- Sunday's the official, 75th birthday of the beer can.

On January 24, 1935, cans of Krueger's Finest Beer first went on sale in Richmond, Virginia.

In the decades that followed, many began collecting the cans.

"My wife said, 'this is my room," Springfield's Jim LePage said about his storage room.

Jim and his son, Theron, have a saying, "I like it so much, I have too much."

In all, JIm has roughly 2,000 cans on display at his home.

Growing up in the 70s, Jim says collecting cans was the thing to do.

"They were on the side of the road, easy access, you traded them, kept the ones your dad brought home," LePage said. There's steel cans, aluminum cans, aluminum bottles. Flat tops, tab taps even something that was never sold.

"A-B made a peel off tab, didn't pour well, so it didn't make it," LePage said.

Jim's oldest is a cone top from 1935. The can had a twist off cap. Many early cans had these since companies saved money using the bottling machine to cap the tops.

The most popular question Jim gets, "hey, you got a Billy Beer?"

"Yep, right there, it's worthless next to a can worth hundreds," LePage said.

If you went to Ebay right now, the most expensive beer can for sale is this White Horse can from 1940. The sale price, $15,995. For Jim, his collection isn't about a price tag. He's never priced his whole collection. It's a value that goes beyond dollars and cents.

"It's a social thing," LePage said, "I have friends from around the world, and it's a lot of fun."

A fun hobby that's bringing father and son together.

"I think it's great to share something with my son," LePage said.

After all, the saying goes success comes in cans.

"I think it's important," LePage said. "Some would say, oh, he's teaching his first grader about beer cans... No, it's the history."

For Jim, he loves learning the history of breweries that no longer exist.

LePage is one of 4,000 members of the Brewery Collectables Club of America.
