The string of events started with the report of an assault with a knife at an apartment in the 900 block of South Jefferson Avenue about 1:20 a.m. The report said the man with a knife was intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance.

When police arrived at that scene, the suspected assaulter was gone. Police quickly located the suspect and chased him in his red pickup.

The pursuit hit speeds between 60mph and 100mph. The chase stopped when the suspect got stuck in a yard. Officers at the scene said the man refused their commands to surrender. As officers approached, they say the man was able to free his car from the mud and tried to run over them. Three officers fired and the man was hit in the neck.

City police officers, Greene County sheriff's deputies and state troopers were all at the scene. Police believe the man's injuries are not life threatening. He was treated at a hospital.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol will investigate the shooting at the request of the Springfield Police Department. The department will also conduct an internal investigation to see if the officers followed departmental policies and procedures. The officers are on paid administrative leave until the Highway Patrol's investigation is done, which is standard operating procedure when officers fire their weapons at suspects.
